Overview
This course, developed from material provided by the Department of Justice, is designed as an introduction and orientation to the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities (‘the Charter’) and its application across Victoria. It is targeted at employees who work for public authorities including public officials, police, councils, ministers and non-government entities exercising public functions on behalf of Victoria such as water, power authorities. This course is designed to give you a broad general awareness of your legal obligations and should not be treated as legal advice.
Objectives
By the completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify what human rights are and why protecting them is important;
- Identify the purpose of the Charter and when it came into operation;
- Recount all of the rights protected by the Charter;
- Explain the impact of the Charter on your role and the key rights that affect your organisation;
- Define your new responsibilities in relation to the Charter;
- Assess the consequences of breaching Charter obligations;
- Support and promote human rights;
- Identify when human rights issues arise in your workplace;
- Establish how to seek help if you think a human right is being breached.
